What to Expect for Your Tooth Extraction
Though most dental concerns can be treated without the need for an extraction, there are some situations where having a tooth pulled is necessary. The most common reasons an extraction is needed are severe tooth decay, crowding, or for wisdom teeth removal. At Ruggless Dental, we perform almost all extractions in our office to give our patients the comfort of having Dr. Shane Ruggless treat all their dental needs, including oral surgery.
Common Reasons for Extractions
- Wisdom teeth – Most people do not have enough room in their mouth for four more teeth which can cause the wisdom tooth to push teeth together causing crowding. They can also become impacted after they come through the gum line, leaving the gum flap open to bacteria and food particles.
- Tooth decay – In most cases, when tooth decay has reached the pulp, a root canal is enough to remove the infection. Yet, if the tooth cannot be saved with a root canal, an extraction is needed to remove the infection before it spreads to the bone.
- Crowding – When there isn’t enough room in your mouth when teeth come in, it can cause crowding. Crowded and overlapping teeth can be difficult to clean correctly, making them ideal areas for bacteria to hide, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. By removing a tooth, the rest of the teeth will have room to moved back into place.
What to Expect During an Extraction
During your extraction procedure, we will numb the area to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Once the tooth has been removed, gauze will be placed to help encourage blood clots to form. We will give you a list of aftercare instructions and a prescription for pain medication to take as needed. It is important to only consume soft foods, avoid drinking from a straw, and to brush and floss carefully during the first few days after surgery.
